Night shifts are easiest to manage when you treat them as one continuous working block, even though the calendar moves from one day to the next.

Record the real start and finish

Use the scheduled time as a plan, then record the actual start and finish after the shift. If you were held over or started late, the difference should be visible rather than lost in a note.

Keep breaks separate

Record breaks as part of the shift record, not as an assumption. This makes total hours easier to understand and gives you a reliable reference when checking a pay period.

Plan recovery, not just coverage

When you repeat a night pattern, check the run of shifts as a whole. Look for short turnarounds, a quick switch from nights to days and enough time to recover before the next block.

Make the date boundary obvious

A shift that starts on Tuesday and ends on Wednesday should still be easy to find from either day. Use a calendar view that shows the overnight span and a detail view that keeps the complete shift together.

Useful night-shift checklist

Confirm the start and end time, record the break, note any handover or extension, and check how the hours fall into the pay period.

Review patterns over time

After a few weeks, compare planned nights with actual nights. Repeated changes can point to a better pattern, a staffing gap or a pay setting that needs attention.
